It's amazing how the more we learn, the more we start to see the world in a whole new light. It's like putting on a pair of glasses that reveal the intricate details and beauty that were always there, but we just didn't notice before.

I live on about 35 acres in Ohio. When I was younger and would walk through the woods, I just saw trees. After learning about different types of trees, I have a whole new appreciation for nature’s wonders. Now I notice maples trees that I can tap in the winter to make syrup. I notice walnut trees that will drop nuts in the fall. I learned how to identify a paw paw tree.

Have you ever heard of them? They are a fascinating tree known for their delicious fruit. They grow right here in Ohio and happen to grow all throughout my woods.

The paw paw tree, scientifically known as Asimina triloba, is native to North America. It's a small deciduous tree that can grow up to 20 feet tall. What makes it unique is its large, tropical-looking leaves that turn a vibrant yellow in the fall.

But the real treat lies in its fruit, the paw paw. Picture a mango and a banana having a lovechild, and you'll get an idea of what a paw paw tastes like. They're greenish-yellow and have a custard-like texture with a sweet, tropical flavor.

Some people describe it as a mix of banana, mango, and melon. They have large seeds like a watermelon. It's truly a taste sensation!

What's fascinating is that paw paws have a rich history in American culture. Native Americans and early European settlers used to enjoy these fruits, and they were even a favorite of George Washington! However, they're not as widely known or commercially available as other fruits, which makes them a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. They are also packed with nutrition. One serving has more than 30% of your daily recommended vitamin C, 39% DV iron, 10% DV potassium, and many other minerals.

Learning about the paw paw tree and its fruit has not only expanded my knowledge but also sparked a sense of curiosity and adventure. It's like finding a hidden treasure in the vast world of nature. This is just one example of how the more we learn, the more we uncover these hidden gems that enrich our lives and help us discover new passions.
